With the job of transporting 4 million riders a year, the Mukilteo Ferry requires smooth loading and unloading of vehicles while providing safe separation for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The design for their new terminal manages to package clear, yet separated circulation for riders from three directions—State Route 525, an adjacent Sound Transit station, and a future waterfront park, while also incorporating an aesthetic that represents the site's historical and tribal significance. The design, led by LMN architects, with assistance from Tiscareno, was a deeply collaborative process with Washington State Department of Transportation, Washington State Ferries, and other state and federal agencies.
